Study of 3D technology and transcoding of 3D video-stream

The penetration of 3D videos is more and more significant both in households and in the entertainment industry. 3D multimedia streaming over the internet also became more prevalent. Increased pretension and quick development of 3D technologies and 3D video-coding contribute to the dispersing of 3D video.

A relevant aim of my thesis was to get acquainted with, and then summarize recently spread 3D technologies and 3D video-coding. In addition one of my goals was to describe nowadays available processes to transcoding 3D content videos. Besides introducing the current point of view of the literature another important aim of my thesis was to perform transcoding of 3D stereoscopic videos which are adapted for examination of user perceived quality of experience (QoE).

The quality of video-coding influences quality of experience perceived by users significantly. During transcoding I changed parameters which importantly determine the quality of video. In most cases transcoding was implemented by ffmpeg software. To test the proper function of the program I made an application to cut some frames from the transcoded videos and examined differences between pictures.

Besides providing transcoded videos for examining the quality of experience I performed additional assignments too. I converted 2D videos to 3D videos by means of the application named Movavi Video Converter 3D. Furthermore I changed the designated 3D video encoder with the help of ffmpeg. Results of the last mentioned activity were subjectively graded by a group of people.

My thesis is useful for all those who would like to overview presently available 3D technologies, current 3D video-coding standards and also would like to become familiar with the transcoding of 3D content videos.
