Every new generation of wireless networks have higher bit rates and more functionality. Due to the significant increase of mobile data traffic by the widely spreaded smartphones and other wireless devices, today's 4G LTE is reaching its limits in the upcoming years. Therefore, it will be necessary to introduce the 5G New Radio, the latest generation of mobile wireless networks.
5G will be indispensable for promoting new, unprecedented techniques such as virtual and augmented reality (VR, AR), autonomous vehicles, the Internet of Things (IoT) or even other technologies that we cannot even imagine for now.
5G NR network fulfils the new requirements by introducing many technical innovations and more sophisticated solutions. These include millimetre wavelength, massive MIMO, beamforming, full duplex operation, and ultra-dense use of small cells.
In my thesis I present how we got to 5G with a brief historical review of cellular networks, the possible use of 5G technology in the future and technological innovations currently under development. Finally, I give an estimation for the performance of 5G by using a simulation I have made.
