Nowadays electric vehicles are getting more and more popular and many can be found in the market. Despite of the fact that the first electric vehicles appeared in the 1800s, popularity of these kind of vehicles rocketed only in the last decade thanks to the bigger and bigger range, the reliability of these cars and also the low maintenance costs. Therefore it is not a surprise that almost all of the big car manufacturers companies have electric cars in their palette.

Moreover we cannot forget about the climate change. Many countries and international organizations recognized the fact that nowadays climate- and energy policy is not sustainable. Therefore there are many internationally supported developments which aims are to find alternative solutions for the combustion engines. This also helps the spread of the electric vehicles.

The aim of this document is to show the history and the appearance of the electric vehicles and to present the different kind of electric driving systems, highlighting their advantages and also the disadvantages.

The other aim of this thesis is to give a general idea about the opportunities of the PMSM motor in electric vehicles. In connection whit this laboratory measurements, complete vehicles models, and simulations will be presented in this thesis to help understand the opportunities and the problems in the electric driving systems.
