As first step for this essay, I had to read the concerning literature. Because lightning protection is regulated by standards, the read literatures are limited to these standards which are the 2nd. and 3rd. parts of IEC 62305. Establishing a lightning protection system is has two steps: calculating the risk related to the building and then designing the system itself. During my work I followed this order. After I studied the IEC 62305-2 standard I had done the risk management on a previously selected family house.

As next step I studied those methods which are used during the planning phase. For this I read the 3rd. part of the IEC 62305 standard. After the presentation of the instructions for designing, I had planned the system for the earlier calculated lightning protection level.

The risk management had to be done twice, but, surprisingly, the designing only once.

Last, but not least I compared the two systems in respect of the changes introduced in the 3rd. edition of standard 62305 and evaluated them.
