Standardized Data Processing for Bioreactors

Pharmaceutical researches and productions are using strictly regulated processes in order to reach the desired output result. The process feedback is produced with the analysis of measured data during the active process. Different equipments are fit for executing the process and recording the data, but each of them has its individual format for publishing the results. In that way, it is impossible to compare the measurement data from different providers. Fortunately, Analytical Information Markup Language (AnIML) is a vendor independent tool which can convert any measurement data into standardized format, which leads to easily compare them.

Bioreactors are that kind of devices which are useful for cell cultivation. Their task is to provide the necessary biological, chemical, and physical environment for the cultivating cell. Bioreactors contain several instruments to check the state of environment. The instruments emit output signals which are captured by Object Linking and Embedding for Process Control (OPC) Servers. Their tasks are to process the signals and disseminate them in the local computer network via Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) protocol. Finally, these DCOM objects are easily understandable for programming languages.

The computer processing can be easily exploited with install Data Collector Agents in the local area network. These Agents will receive the captured data from the OPC Servers and forward them to an Integration Server. The communication between the Agent and the Integration Server is realized by RESTful (Representational State Transfer) web services. If the Server is not available, the Agents just save the incoming data into their local backup, until the Server is in active state again.

The Integration Server has to store all data from the Agents in efficient way. The aims are to store small binary data to quickly identify the data and restore the data from the Server's hard disk in fast way.

At the end, different connected Client Applications will be profit from the stored data. The most important Client Application is the Seahorse which is developed by the company. It occasionally queries the fresh data points from the Integration Server via web services and converts them to standardized AnIML data format. AnIML format is simple to use to plot different diagrams and data tables.
