Implementing CAN/LIN demo board

In cars today dozens of electronic control unit can be found. Int the beginning they were operating as individual units, but it became a necessity that they must cooperate and to make communication networks for them. In today’s cars multiple there is also multiple communication systems. The 3 most common communication system is the CAN (Controller Area Network), LIN (Local Interconnect Network) and the FlexRay.

Years before the Department of Measurement and Information Systems developed a CAN/LIN gateway demonstration board for the education of CAN and LIN systems, which is controlled by so-called Mitmót system, which was also developed by the department. The 8 bit microcontroller started to get outdated and today the 32 bit SKT3700 Giant Gecko development board replaced it. However it has no CAN, nor LIN interface, therefore it was suggested to develope a CAN/LIN gateway for educational purpose, which can be connected to the SKT3700 development board. The task of my degree thesis is to make the CAN/LIN gateway and it’s software that operates it.

In my degree thesis I did a literature search about the background, functions and mechanisms of CAN and LIN protokoll that are needed to fulfill this task or to develope it. Also i studied a demonstration board to survey what properties the new board needs. I analysed the connecting opportunities of the SKT3700. I created the hardware, it’s circuit diagram and printed circuit plans. I created the more important functions of the software which is controlling the board, with which the department can develop it further and use itt o educate the students.
