My degree work was to develop a digital room-thermostat which – in addition to the conventional manual setup, it – is able to communicate with a personal computer and could be controlled through GSM network. In this semester within the scope of the Diplomatervezés I subject, my work was to survey the parts of the theory, to complete the specification of the task, to select the components, to complete the circuit diagram, and finally the development and the testing of the GSM communication.

The main topics of the theory parts were the heating-regulation systems and the detailed survey of the (conventional, digital and GSM) room-thermostats’ operation. For the functions’ accomplishment in the concrete project an 8 bit PIC microcontroller is responsible. Concerning the circuit diagram and the structure of the hardware I was aspired to be simple. Beyond that the appliance is made of a simple 2 row LCD display where each row consists of 16 characters, it contains 2 LEDs and 4 push buttons. In addition to the customary thermometer and thermostat functions, an opportunity is present of using special function of comforts and security functions in manual and automatic way through a computer. The state of the appliance and the event log book which is stored in its memory can be queried from it. Besides we can control the device via SMS too; among other things we can set up the required temperature, start a pre-defined program as well as we can do a query of the current temperature in the room.

Bared by the detailed specification I made the functional blockscheme and the hardware-software plan. I created the circuit diagram by the plans, chose the right components which are correct for the scaling and the goal. I built the microcontrolled test system and I wrote the program code based on the software system plan. The development environment gave me the opportunity to upload the program code directly to the tool and test it. during

The final test phase came after the coding, where the possible errors were detected and corrected.

As the closing of the thesis I analysed the completed work and the apparatus from engineering and economical view. I mentioned the possible development opportunities.
