Comparison and analysis of DVB-S and DVB-S2 satellite transmissions

DVB-S and DVB-S2, are the first and second generation of digital video broadcasting for satellites. These technologies use satellites for commercial, broadcasting purposes. In this study we will be thoroughly discussing each of them, in matter of their parameters, the modulation schemes used by each of them, and the means by which we can test both systems.

We first examine the parameters that this technology is based on, what affects data transmission through satellite, which error correction codes are used and their efficiencies, and which stages does the signal go through until it is broadcasted. For DVB-S, a spectrum analyzer, a DVB-S receiver with BER measurement, and a DVB-S transmitter are used to test BER and C/N ratio with different code rates as well as, to evaluate the system. In DVB-S2, data was collected from a study that performed the testing, for verifying the DVB-S2 equipment status, and compares it to the standard DVB-S2 parameters. The data of both the tested parameters and the collected data from the study were then compared to each other.

The purpose of this study is to test both systems, compare the test parameters to those of the standard parameters, and examine their performances compared to each other.
