Using digital sensors in automatic transmission control unit according to ISO26262 standard

The spreading of SENT protocol (which is intended to allow transmission of high resolution data between sensors and ECUs) created new possibilities to increase the safety integrity level of E/E systems used in automotive industry.

I performed the safety analysis of a position sensor connected to a transmission control unit in my dissertation. First, I presented basic concepts of safety and the ISO 26262 standard then I explained the role of the position sensors in a dual clutch transmission. I followed the required steps by the standard from the concept phase till the level of HW development. I performed the FMEDA for both the analog and the digital sensor concept which is required by the standard as a validation method.

As a result of the FMEDA the analog sensor concept is classified as ASIL B, while the digital sensor concept managed to reach ASIL C.

I got the result which I expected when I started my dissertation. As a conclusion, it can be identified that using a position sensor with SENT interface can increase the automotive safety integrity level of a control unit in a significant way.
