TESTBED ANALYSIS OF DIGITAL FOUNTAIN BASED COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL
The purpose of this Diploma Thesis document is to give testbed analysis of a new digital fountain based communication protocol (DFCP - Digital Fountain based Communication Protocol) with paying particular attention to compare it with various TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) versions. The research of this protocol was initiated by the weaknesses of TCP protocols. Those weaknesses are real issues especially when high speed networks are used. The thesis includes the description of the compared protocols and any other necessary knowledge to understand the analysis. The measurements were done in one of the laboratories of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The various network conditions were emulated by DummyNet which is a network emulation software. The DummyNet was running on a FreeBSD 8.2 operating system, while the host computers had Linux operating systems. This document describes what is the procedure of making the testbed, what was configured in DummyNet and in other softwares too. The result of this analysis showed that this new transport layer protocol has many advantages compared to TCP, especially when packet drop rate is high in the network. Of course it has some deficiencies too, for example fairness to other type of transport protocols, adaptive mechanism to change transmission adjustments based on packet loss.
