Development of a data acquisition and reporting system for a pill coating machine

Modern manufacturing processes must be supported by a reliable quality insurance system. This is especially true in the pharmaceutical industry, where low quality products put on market due to the unreliability of the quality insurance system may result in irreversible health damage for consumers. Mass production and cost efficiency requirements impede the systematic and complete inspection of every single product. In such cases, the reports generated during production shall act as proofs of conformity with quality requirements.

The topic of the thesis is a data acquisition and reporting system for a technology using a coating machine in a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. The thesis presents and studies the data acquisition options provided by the in Rockwell FactoryTalk View Studio 6.10 Site Edition software bundle. The functioning and implementation of the suggested software components are discussed in details. The components realized include a supporting program developed in the .NET framework and the structure of the database used. Ways of communication among the components is also presented. To ensure the proper input of non-generated data, a separate user interface is also designed and described. Throughout the development of the system components a continuous attention has to be paid to satisfy the quality management requirements and to ensure stable operations.
