The digital video signal standards have a common disadvantage, namely that they work only within a limited distance, which is less than 10 metres in average. This distance is usually enough for the everyday use, but for professional usage (e.g. large conference rooms, or screening rooms) it may proved to be insufficient.
The Lightware Visual Engineering Ltd. is a leading manufacturer and supplier of signal extender devices. With the transmitter and receiver units of these devices, it is possible to transmit video signals over hundred meters (using twisted pair cables), or several kilometers (using fiber optical cables). The 10GbE technology – which appears in the title of my thesis – is used by a newly developed signal extender family. What it makes different from the previous solutions, that these new devices have a modular design, which means, that with different type of expansion cards they can not only be compatible with all currently used video signal standards, but they can transmit almost any other type of data within the bandwidth range of 10 Gigabit per second.
My task was to design two expansion cards, one with Dual-Link DVI input, and one with Dual-Link DVI output. In the first phase of the design I had to acquire the DVI standard. After that, I had to choose the appropriate video ICs. Based on the informations written down in their datasheets, I managed to create the block diagram of the expansion cards. During the design it had to be kept in mind, that the cards had to be fully compatible with the mainboard. In addition to schematics drawings, I designed printed circuit boards too, complying with the design rules.
Subsequent tasks include the testing of the manufactured cards. With the help of a software engineer, the video ICs need to be configured, and after that, the Dual-Link DVI video transmitting capabilities will be tested too.
