Implementation of Human-Computer Interaction Using Muscle Activity Device

Nowadays the newest technologies reach more and more people easier than ever before. As the possibilities and opportunities change and more advanced products become available to the customers, the desire for more useful, intuitive and efficient input devices grows as well. A few decades ago we didn’t even have graphical user interface, but today we have to deal with 3 dimension displays and control advanced technologies everywhere. These new fields motivate the discovery and experimentation of alternative input methods.

One of them is based on the measurement of the muscle activity during certain movements. This method is capable of detecting the changes of the electronic signals generated by the muscle contractions. A device like this placed on the forearm can track the movements of the fingers, or at least detect the gestures defined by their collective movement. In this document I will try to introduce the possibilities of this technique with the help of the Myo armband. This device provides acceleration and orientation data along with gesture recognition, which widens the fields of use even further.

A solution like this can change the interaction with the computers in such a way, that it suits the usage better. For example, sign language could be digitalized, or interpreted by a computer easier, or the manipulation of the objects in the 3D space could become more intuitive.
