Lightning protection design of a building

A new lightning protection international standard was published in 2006, which the European Union also accepted. The old MSZ 274 standard was in effect in Hungary until the 1st of February, 2009. Since the 1st of February, 2009 the new lightning protection international standard, the MSZ EN 62305 has to be used, so the external and internal lightning protection of buildings must be designed and constructed according to this standard.

The MSZ 274 standard was in effect for decades in our country, so it is difficult for the specialists to switch to the new standard, especially because both the extent and approach of the MSZ EN 62305 is significantly different from its ancestor. A lot of interpretation questions arose about using the new standard, so it is necessary to give a more detailed presentation of the standard. This task is easier if we present the standard by using lightning protection design samples.

In the course of my thesis I describe the structure of the two standards, and I present them by planning the lightning protection system of a medical center according to the old and the new standards. After the planning I show the differences between the standards and I describe the advantages and disadvantages.

I hope that my design helps specialist to understand and oversee the regulations of the MSZ EN 62305 standard and they will be able to properly use it later.
