Development of a Power-Plant Investment Simulator Game

The goal of this thesis is to create a multiplayer game that demonstrates the motivation for power plant investments and the mechanism of the energy trade. The creation of the software has begun in the 2012/2013 spring semester, as part of a university course. In my thesis I introduce the concept of the software, which is still under development.

In this turn based game, every player has to make decisions about investing in power plant, by choosing the technology and the construction site. Six types of power plants are available in the game. The game supports trading on a pool market, where the players submit how much energy they are willing to produce and at what price. The aim is to maximize the profit.

The concept of the game is based on a number of already existing software solutions. This concept was completed with my and my consultant’s ideas. The underlying work introduces the already existing similar software. I write about features of the Hungarian energy production and power plants. This thesis presents the process of a power plant investment, and introduces the available support schemes for the construction, and for subsidizing renewable energy sources. Finally, I write about the electricity trade: the appearance of the energy market, the different trade contracts and the energy stock exchange.
