Bidding strategies of power plants on day-ahead power exchanges

It’s an aim of Europe to integrate the national power exchanges, and create a pan-European power exchange. One of the desired effects of this is to improve utilization of power plants. At the moment market participants can make hourly orders and block orders, but new algorithms under development contain a special type of orders, called Complex orders.

In my thesis I made five strategies for trading on the day-ahead market. Strategies contain all types of orders mentioned above. The simulation is based on real market circumstances of an earlier week. The main evaluation criterion is the profit, what I calculated with a simple model. Besides that, I analyze the strategies’ efficiency in different parts of the day, and the continuity of production. In the end of my thesis I compare and analyze the results of different strategies.
