Nowadays the modern railway units like trams, metros and trains contain several electrical devices, which need to be controlled and observed. Such devices are for example the “simpler” lighting control system, the PIS/PA (public information system/ public address) or the highly complex and safety critical braking system too. These systems are connected to a single network which can be found all along the train. This kind of distributed network is called the TCMS network.
The TCMS network possesses numerous beneficial properties. Because of the fact that every device is reachable and each of them can communicate on the network, the controlling, the maintenance and diagnostics are much more efficient, easier and it means lower costs at manufacturing and during service operation. Also, the pieces of information about the train’s systems can be observed by the driver with monitoring devices.
The objective of my BSc thesis work was to integrate a TCMS network with testing purposes for a brake system. The test network is based on EtherNet/IP, which is a communication protocol that is widely used in industrial solutions. I made my thesis at the institute of Knorr-Bremse Rail Vehicle Systems, Budapest. In the course of my work, I have integrated a brake control unit, a vehicle control unit, a HVAC unit and a door control unit to the test network. I have also made a client application for monitoring and controlling purposes.
