User interface development to automate the tracking of white blood cells

Leukocytes i.e. white blood cells play a crucial role in our body’s immune response. The efficiency of their arrival to the infected areas is vital. Therefore there are several ongoing medical researches about finding chemical materials that can influence the migration of white blood cells. To measure the motion of the cells, researchers analyze microscopy image sequences of the samples. With the lack of appropriate software support, this process is done solely manually. The paths of the cells are manually marked frame by frame.

The scope of this thesis is to create an application for Semmelweis University, that can speed up this process by automatizing most of the manual work. Due to the high importance of reaching the best accuracy and minimizing the number of false detections, the program has to let the user interact in every step of the workflow.

The final aim is to develop an application for Windows platform that provides special image processing tools and an easy-to-use interface to support the activity of tracking white blood cells in a fast and accurate way.
