The optical communication systems nowadays play an increasing role in the world of communications. Their wired (fiber) realisation has many advantages compared to the previous technologies. The attenuation of transmitted signal in optical fibers is much smaller while the bandwidth is larger, than for instance in twisted pair or in coaxial cable transmitted signals. The only way of wire trapping is the inflection of the optical cable, but in this case the problem is immediately detectable. This study is presenting the implementation of an optical measurement’s automation. Nowadays the demand for automated measurements are significant in all fields of industry. Automation accelerates production and helps to reduce the use of human work. As a result the potential number of human mistakes is also decreasing. The task of the measurement is the automation of characterizing semiconductor laser diodes. This thesis is describing the most important definitions in connection with the semiconductor lasers, presenting the instruments, which have been used during the measurement and presenting also the measurement control environment, called Agilent VEE. Finally the created software and its rating are being described in the study.
