GPS data logger microcontroller design

The topic of my BSC thesis is "GPS data logger microcontroller design". My task was to plan and build a device, that can display the actual speed and save the GPS coor-dinates to an SD memory card, in a format that can be handled by Goodle Maps, so later the route can be drawn. It has to be mobile, so it has to work from accumulators and from the cigar lighter of a car.

The first step was to specify the task. Next I had to choose the suitable parts. I tried to choose the well known brands, and the parts I used before. The next step was to plan the schematic and the printed circuit board. I did these with Altium Designer, because I used it earlier.

When the printed circuit board was ready, I had to solder the parts on it, resuscitate the device and to program it.

The tasks of the program:

• control the display

• get the GPS data

• save data to SD card

I used an STM32F4 Discovery Kit for the programming.

Last I had to test the device and to document the process.
