One of the essential and greatest invention of the modern life is the Global Positioning System (GPS). It was developed primarily for military purposes by the United States Department of Defense but later it has become part of our everyday life.

Today more and more countries and organizations are operating or planning to operate Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). Thanks to this and the developing of the auxiliaery systems we can get accuracy down to a few meters.

Even the development of the GSM networks has surpassed the development of the GPS networks. In Hungary the GSM-based mobile telecommunication was launched in 1993. The latest 5th generation mobile network will be launced soon which will provide users even higher data rates and significantly reduced latency.

With these technologies we can create tracking devices for our cars, bicycles, pets or even the wildlife can be tracked. Another important application is fleet managment or live telemetry in motorsports.

My job was to design a GPS and GSM-based tracking unit primarily for real-time tracking (of vehicles). At the end of my thesis I would like to pouint out some possiblilities of further upgrades.
