Among modern automation systems pharmaceutical process control is standing out because of its complexity and high quality assurance requirements. In most cases Distributed Control Systems (DCS) are used to automate these kind of processes as they are able to handle both controlling and management tasks.
In my thesis I had to develop a pharmaceutical liquid raw material and liquid waste handling system using DCS. The system implements the following functions: material transfer, material administration, safety- and alarm system, graphic interfaces, and coordination between the parts of the process control software.
In the first part of my thesis I demonstrate the main steps of liquid raw material and liquid waste handling and describe the GAMP and S88 requirements of planning pharmaceutical process control systems. After that I present the steps of the software development procedure, the DCS I used, which was delivered by Yokogawa Electric Corporation, and the realization of the developed control system. Finally I describe the testing of the system.
