HDMI 2.0 interface implementation on FPGA

The reader of this thesis can get an insight into the world of video and audio signals, and into the developement processes of high speed data transmission system.

My thesis topic is connected to the project of Lightware Kft. The goal of the project was to develop a media transmitter/receiver system which use Internet Protocoll (IP) to send or receive data. My role was to design, create a communication modul in VHDL (Very High Speed Integrated Circuits Hardware Description Language) language, which can handle (send and receive) HDMI 2.0 datastream.

In the first chapter I define –based on the literature- the basic definiton, concepts of video technology, and describe the significant parts of the standard that specifies HDMI data stream. I describe the data transfer frame formats, coding procedures, modes of the audio and video data handle, furthermore the local bus of the designed system.

In the second part of the study I review the unit which was designed by me. Here I write the task details, difficulties and possibilities of the various simulations and tests.

In the last part I summarize the results, describe the learned knowledge and I shall discuss further opportunities for improvement.
