Supporting Network- and Service Management through the Analysis of GTP CDRs

In my thesis, I describe some practical methods of the fault and performance management of the mobile core network. This thesis focuses on the GTP Control protocol processes, and the analysis possibilities of the session data records that are generated through network monitoring.

First, I present some of the necessary knowledge about the UMTS and LTE network, the GTP protocol types, it’s characteristics and the general way of processing of the captured messages. I briefly describe the GTP CDRs, software and process queries that allow the operator to access them. In order to efficiently manage the network, it is necessary to know the interpretation of the processed data. I describe the SGA-Assembler software, which is responsible for CDR record creation.

The thesis includes a documentation of this SGA-Assembler software. I demonstrate the typical records, which includes the most occurrent type of all: the bad records with a special place for the timed-out records (which are especially important). Furthermore, I present the measurement experiences and conclusions, and close the topic with a summary, including ideas for further improvements
