Efficient energy management implementation is considered to be one of today’s main issues. The current electrical grid cannot comprehend the ever growing demand for energy, shows weaknesses concerning the integration of renewable energy sources to the network, and has serious security problems. Since the electric grid is part of the critical infrastructure, its security is crucial.

The goal of the thesis is to introduce the intelligent grid concept, known as Smart Grid. Such a system establishes a two-way communication link between the utility, the control system and the consumers. Thus, the energy production can be made more efficient, thereby generating significant economic and environmental advantages.

The main aspect of the analysis of the new system is its security, the main goal is to discover security issues before the implementation. In the paper I propose a new network model for the new system’s implementation, and present an encryption method for secure communication on the network.
