There are many places where the switch mode power supply (SMPS) is used by industry for examples a microcontroller’s supply, a lab power supply or even in a sailing boat. In the first instance SMPS is used because it has very high efficiency. The reason is that, the SMPS doesn’t dissipate power to reach the result (aside from not ideal components).
In my thesis I designed such a power supply, which is made of DC/DC converters in a flyback multiple output SMPS architecture. In the SMPS usually there is a control part, which can be analog or digital. In my thesis I used digital control so I had to use a microcontroller. The primary purpose of the system is that the SMPS can supply analog and digital systems. Actually it can be used as lab supply also. The user can control the output voltage on the personal computer. The communication between PC and SMPS used USB and USART protocols.
In the next parts I will present the DC/DC converters theory, which is important for designing. After that I will show the steps of the SMPS hardware and software designing.
