Design of complex dashboards

While working with manufacturing data some form of visualization can be essential. Understanding huge masses of raw data might prove to be a hard task for the average user, however a good dashboard design could help them by providing a clear overall picture of what’s really important. In the industry SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) like systems have been present for decades, visualizing said data is one of their main features.

My thesis focuses on creating a complex dashboard application using open-source technologies both for storing and visualizing data. While documenting this procedure I will mention some guidelines one should consider following when designing a dashboard. I will also demonstrate a case study featuring real manufacturing data from an existing production line.

The finished application provides an interactive platform for the user with the opportunity to use filters – that way they can get answers to questions related to the data set behind the application.
