Nowadays corporate networks go through intense development. The network appliances have to serve the constantly growing data transfer rates and the changing service demands.
In my thesis I demonstrate the network design process through a greenfield investment, step by step, starting from the needs analysis, followed by the selection of appropriate network devices, all the way to the design of the different layers. During the process I got to know the standards, technologies and best practices used generally at the different layers. The aim of this study is to show the methods, that have proved to be working the best during the years, and also to construct a universal method to design complex networks.
In the first part of my thesis I present the process of needs analysis. Then, I review the standards needed to design the passive core network, and I plan it accordingly, too. In the following part I deal with the design process of the active network. First I introduce the necessary technologies to build a modern network. After the introduction I choose the appropriate devices from the biggest manufacturers’ (HP, Juniper, Cisco, Ruckus, Sonicwall) products. The selection is followed by the layer by layer construction of the network, and by describing different aspects, best practices and models for the design. At the end of my thesis I perform a conformity test on the designed network and I propose an implementation plan.
My thesis contains useful information for network professionals or system administrators, who plan on designing a completely new network infrastructure or just want to learn about the modern technologies used during the planning process.
