The design and development of a patient information system for hospitals

Computer technology has been continuously developing and spreading since its beginnings. Today its proliferation in developed countries has reached such a level that it would be difficult to imagine our world without the achievements of information technology. We encounter them in every segment of our lives. Not only these devices serve as sources of information or entertainment but they also help us to accomplish complex tasks quickly.

People want to accomplish their tasks and duties ever faster. The saying ‘time is money’ is true in a very literal sense. In this accelerating world institutions slowly but surely open up to information technology in order to speed up administration and improve customer satisfaction. Unfortunately hospitals are lagging behind in this development.

I wanted to offer a possible solution to this problem in my thesis. I envisaged the solution as a web based system that helps patients to find information on the health services offered by the hospital and simplifies access to them via an appointment reservation option. I designed and implemented such a patient information system including a web- and a mobile client. I also prepared the system to handle simple documents that are created during the hospital treatment.

On the way to reaching my goal I have obtained important knowledge about the technologies I have used. I have gained a deep understanding of the Spring framework, one of the most widely used java web frameworks, and related technologies. In addition to this, I have learned the structure and the details of programming an Android application.
