Nowadays, thanks to the growth of the internet end various social media platforms, following sports is easier than ever before. The leagues and teams can use the revenue generated by the growing popularity to increase their performance, which can be done in various ways. One of the most obvious possibilities is the use of the more and more advanced IT support systems. The data created by these technologies can be used in many ways, including assistance in creating the perfect game strategy, as well as the application in the player selection process. These datasets are not only useful for the teams, but they can ease the job of the media, and also can be interesting for the fans and sport bettors. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the creation of a system, capable of processing and visualizing basketball data, which can be used in the previously listed fields.
The first chapter explains the connections between sport and technology. The second chapter discusses the connection of computer science and basketball, especially the North American professional league, the NBA. It will also address the collection and application of statistical basketball data. The third chapter introduces the field of data visualization, with emphasis on the popular technological technologies. The fourth chapter contains a specification and design of system for collecting, processing and presenting basketball data, detailing the used technological methods. The fifth chapter demonstrates the ways of gathering and aggregating the data and presents the finished data visualizations.
