The gapped silicon carbide surge arrester are being removed from the operating system of the utilities, however, a large number are still installed in the power system. This work shows that the leakage current measurement, normally used as diagnostic technique for ZnO surge arresters.

The protection of over voltage from air or other sources is one of the fundamental conditions of safe operation of power systems
I will present that how necessary is the protection of over voltage, and what types has it got.
I specify how the ZnO arresters work, and I show its properties, and the backround of measurements results. I detail the theoretical backround of nonlinear resistance ZnO scones.
After the theoretical review I present the measurement process of nowadays with the overvoltage arrester. I represent some arresters status whith their wrong power loss, current, and resistance.
I show how can we measure the capacitance current in the best way.
I detail the characteristics of ZnO arrester that works for many years now.
I show how important is the thermal imager through a real example.
