Development of LED matrix controller application

In my thesis I describe the system I have built, composed of LED matrix units and a controller application, then I describe the communication between them as well. I attempted to create a system that is easy to build and can be used at home and in smaller clubs with higher quality light techniques.

In the first part of my thesis I will present the LED matrix units, then the controller desktop application and finally the communication between them.

The controller application’s main tasks are to create the animations, play and mix them and to know the exact location of the LED matrix units. The LED matrix units connect through WiFi to a local area network, while the PC running the controller application connect to the same network with an Ethernet cable or WiFi. The matrixes communicate with the controller through this network, making them usable in bigger houses.

In many programs it is expected to use controllers through MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), so the units can be controlled with buttons and potentiometers. In my application I implemented this functionality, as well as the possibility to receive data through Art-NET, therefore the units can be controlled with a Lighting Console.
