The aim of my thesis was to introduce myself to the design procedure of lightning protection systems together with the applicable laws and standards, furthermore the design of a selected residential building's system.
In the first part of my thesis, I outline the source of threat and the typical damages it tends to cause.
In the following part, I introduce the structure of the lightning protection system where I also mention those equipments and principles that help attain efficient protection to avoid damages caused by thunderbolts.
My description of the lightning protection design procedure is based on the current MSZ EN 62305 standard, which can be applied to achieve appropriate protection. I also discuss the unique properties of each individual element and the necessary calculations as well.
Following the MSZ EN 62305 standard's prescriptions, I conducted an independent design work to develop a residential building's lightning protection system, which building was constructed according to the plans of Gábor Horváth, who is a civil engineer student at Széchenyi István University. During the planning, I examined the applicability and precision of the standard, furthermore I made a comparison with the old, MSZ 274 standard.
As the conclusion of my thesis, I evaluated the conducted work, and I expressed my comments regarding the applicability of the MSZ EN 62305 standard by highlighting its benefits and shortcomings.
