The world of smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and other smart devices is an integral part of our lives today. The use of these devices is extremely diverse: they provide assistance in our everyday tasks, we can maintain contact with our friends and keep up with the happenings of the world with them nearly instantaneously. We can use them for work, recreation, playing games or even to learn, practice things.
My thesis aims to combine the last two: my task was to design and develop a mobile educational game based on the Android operating system which aids architect- and civil engineering students in providing accurate engineering estimates for numerous technical values and measurements, improving their engineering skills and competence.
During my work, I analyse the typical features and fields of applications of games made for mobile devices and present the most used gameplay elements of mobile educational games. I briefly review the possibilities provided by the main mobile software platforms then analyse the traits of the Android operating system, related to the subject.
The larger part of my paper is showing the process of design and development of a mobile application. In this part, I describe the utilized technologies, go through the main steps of the design process, analyse the design choices taken, providing an insight into the architecture of the designed system, presenting the use and co-operation of client- and server-side solutions. I explain some interesting aspects of implementing the application, then demonstrate the features of the finished game, and also cover the testing of the application.
