Creating a Mesh based on Point Cloud

The goal of the thesis is the introduction of the development, that took place at the Department of Automation and Applied Informatics, and involved the implementation of a mesh generation algorithm, into the software of the Scanopus 3D scanner. The scanner creates a point cloud, using a line emitting laser, a camera and various algorithms. The point cloud is not suitable for most of the 3D applications, which use so called meshes. Mesh is a structure, that approximates the surface of an objects with finite number of polygons (in most cases with triangles). An algorithm, that creates a mesh using point cloud as input, is called mesh generation process. The thesis introduces the 3D scanner techniques, their applications, as well as the mathematical background of the algorithms, used in the mesh generation process. Later, the steps of the development are described in detail, as well as the results achieved. The development not only implemented an algorithm that can be well parameterized, but included various improvements on the software, to make its use faster and easier for the user.
