Development of an agricultural IoT sensor system

The goal of Information Technology is to create solutions to real life problems. An important part of an engineer’s job is to plan complex systems that enable users to interact with the data they need.

Application area for embedded systems is growing rapidly. With the advancement of technology in the field and the reduction of costs for equipment, there are more opportunities for smaller entrepreneurs to use technology to their advantage. This project’s aim is to create a low-cost system that presents agricultural data in an accessible and user friendly way. Built primarily with cheap and simple sensors, the sensor node will send its data using long range radio frequencies. The data is uploaded to the cloud via a gateway using mobile internet connection. Finally, it is presented to users on an online page using modern web frameworks and technologies, allowing each user to view and manage their data.

In this document I am outlining the technological background for this system as well as the structure and implementation of the individual parts of it. I give on overview of the workings of the system, its current applications and a brief glimpse into possible future expansions and alternative usages.
