Nowadays, most of the households in Hungary have a digital receiver. Due to the ongoing digital switchover, the digital television viewing is ever faster replacing analog broadcasts. This phenomenon can also be observed globally.
The advantages of digital broadcasting are excellent image and sound quality, and – besides interactive services – bandwidth efficiency. For example, 8-10 digital channels can be transmitted through one analog channel in digital terrestrial broadcasts, greatly increasing the number of channels to be offered. For this, efficient coding device should be used. In the thesis, I perform picture quality measurements for different coding devices in laboratory conditions.
The picture quality can be measured by objective and subjective metrics depending on the bit rate. I perform the measurements with professional picture quality analyser, which is presented in the thesis. The results show that the coding unit complies with the requirements of quality and bandwidth efficiency, and seeing the results of different encoders comparative analysis can be made.
Another important aspect is that the encoder should be able to work with the digital headend devices, and the transport stream to meet the requirements. The associated standard and monitoring are also included in the thesis.
