Developement of a PoE demonstration device

I’ve wrote my thesis at Silicon Laboratories which is an american semiconductor company. I’ve been working as an intern in Power over Ethernet (PoE) department. The divisions’s tasks include presenting the practical application of PoE ICs (integrated circuits) and promoting sales of the products. The topic of my thesis is to develop a demonstration environment for the above mentioned integrated circuits.

PoE is a technology that enables powering devices through an Ethernet network. Energy efficiency is also important for the technology. Presentation of energy efficiency and power supply is not a simple task, as it is usually not very spectacular.

To present these semiconductors, I’ve started to design a hardware system, which can measure and display some aspect of the ICs’ behavior. The hardware system can be connected to the PC, in the future, an application can be used to monitor the operation of the ICs.

Compared to earlier solutions this system presents the semiconductors’ practical application in a spectacular way, based on measurements. This device is more compact and mobile than the ones before.

As a final result I’ve achieved to design a system which is suitable to present even newer products in the long term.
