Configuration of QAD Enterprise Application System

The main purpose of the thesis is to introduce the configuration and data extraction possibilities of QAD Enterprise Applications ERP system. The concerned topics are divided in four main groups as: system architecture, installation steps and parameters, reporting by built-in tools and listing configuration data by self-developed functions.

Architecture primarily shows the multi-layer solution of version eB2.1. It can be seen what kind of servers are involved in the information flow process until the data gets to the screen of the user from the database, and backwards. The role and operation of the AppServer is discussed in details as the functions of the .NET based user interface communicate using this solution.

By the end of the installation and parameter phase a new standalone database was born on a specially dedicated virtual machine operating Suse Linux Enterprise Server. All the installation steps are discussed through which the user can reach from JDK through PROGRESS until the user interface. Start and shutdown scripts are highlighted as the database can be set using these scripts. These setup parameters are different by clients as each client uses different hardware environment and operates different number of users.

Databases store data in a structured way, but this structure is not always enough to show the users the proper information. Using the built-in reporting tools of QAD EA the thesis demonstrates how the relevant information – or sometimes certificates – can be extracted from the database.

There are always some functions and needs that the ERP system is not able to handle during an implementation project. These needs must be satisfied by self-developed programs. The thesis presents two special data extraction programs that help the users validate some configuration parameters such as start script or settings of a user.

Sample tasks introduce solutions for situations that occur in real-life practice as well. The installed system is based on a state of a live database, ready to have the special company specified data to be entered.
