Routing and Cluster Functions for Asterisk Based Operator Network

In recent years, the number of small and medium-sized telecommunication service provides have been increasing rapidly. Nowadays these providers have a dominant share of the telecommunications market. The growth in the number of providers has increased the number of interconnections and new services have emerged.

The changed situation poses new challenges for network operators; the smallest ones can only meet the expectations and provide reliable service at the cost of great efforts. There is a need for a fault tolerant system that can monitor various network elements and provide high availability. The project was aimed to design and implement such a system for Opennetworks Kft.

The implemented Asterisk module system provides redundant operation of the service provider network. The basis of the solution is a control system that allows the network elements to have a precise knowledge of the network status, while failures can be indicated in short time. The automatic call management decisions can be overridden by user rules for maintenance. As an extension of functionalities, least cost routing has also been implemented.

Further development plans include full redundancy for SIP servers and module integration with different, non-Asterisk based systems. Thus monitoring could be extended to the company's whole service network.
