Capability measurements of SMD placement machines and analysis of placement failures

I have written my thesis at Robert Bosch Electronics Ltd. in Hatvan. I could get to know the machines and equipment of production. Furthermore, I could get an insight into the modern electronic production. The topic of my thesis is the capacity test of SMD pick and place machines and also the filtering of placement failures through which we could get to know the operation and capacity tests of pick and place machines.

Nowadays the most widespread technology is surface assembly. It means that the parts are not placed in the holes just as in the case of through-hole production but they are placed on the conductive surface and create electric and mechanic bands by using some conductive material. I have concluded these methods in the chapter of surface assembly technology.

The placement process, just as any other real process, is not ideal, problems can come up. These problems hinder the production still they are present every day. During the years several different solutions have been developed to filter out these problems and decrease their extent.

Pick and place machines are significant parts of production, these machines place the parts and build up the printed circuit board. They have already been developed in the 1950s and it still continues today. It has led to the increase of their accuracy and capability (speed at which they place the parts), their operation can be coordinated even better. Their structure is very similar, the base of various brands and types are the same, only their function can vary: some are more capable to place bigger parts (parts with cover), other place only smaller ones (small resistance, for example 0402 and smaller). Mathematic equations and correlations are necessary for the description and modeling of machines and processes to make them understandable and control them. By the test in my thesis we could receive an accurate indicator – also used in standards – of the operation. It indicates if the process is not working according to the expectations. We could improve their capacity, accuracy and machine capability with my development proposal, so its introduction is advised.
