Silverlight controls in an ASP.NET based social networking portal

In the first years of the new millennium, the explosive growth of the Internet changed the everyday habits of people both in commercial practice and in private life. Besides the still very determining e-mail service, the users of the Internet tend to keep contact with each other via social networking services.

The general-purpose social networks like the globally known Facebook or the Hungarian iWiW are excellent for following the events of our friends or a group, but they are not too practical to connect people with common interests or in the same profession. For that reason the smaller, thematic social networking sites that target professionals has reason for existence alongside nowadays’ ruling social networks that offer leisure time for everyone.

The purpose of my diploma project is to design and implement the basics of a thematic social networking portal for the research group on signature verification of Department of Automation and Applied Informatics at BME that brings together the teachers, the students and anyone else who is interested in signature authentication.

I divided my thesis into five main parts. In the first part, I briefly introduce the web technologies that are required to implement Silverlight applications and a social networking site that is based on ASP.NET MVC framework. In the second chapter of my work I show the motivational system that I designed for the portal and which is responsible for the community experience for the users.

In the third and fourth parts, I present the design considerations and the reasons behind the decisions as well as the implementation details of the basics of the portal and the Silverlight plug-ins. The operation of the social networking portal and the Silverlight applications is illustrated through practical examples.

In the completion of my thesis I summarize my experiences and I make proposals for further development.
