The goal of this thesis was the automation of a small scale brewery, to gain insight, through the design and realisation of a food industry plant, to the unique traits of a Programmable Logic Controller - PLC based system.

The thesis gives an overview of the unique traits, and the philosophy required to understand PLC programming, and the integrated development environment (IDE) required to develop programs and features for OMRON devices. Introduces the process of beer brewing, and through the chemical and biological background of brewing, it gives further reasons towards certain decisions made during realisation.

The thesis shows the process of designing an automated plant, from the perspective of an electrical engineer. It also includes the drawing of the circuit diagrams, and the selection of the equipment.

Finally the thesis gives solutions regarding the automation of the aforementioned processes of brewing, and the human machine interface, where the synergy of ergonomy and utitily truly shines.
