Through the evolution of information technologies and its modern appliances, the acceleration of information flow has brought new concepts and opportunities to higher education. Thanks to these, a decent number of innovations have been introduced not just by creating new learning methods but because of the increasing usage of online tools, contents and communication. On the one hand, the usefulness of current technologies are clear, but on the other hand, the modern age raised even more complex challenges than before. Universities, therefore have to keep up with the information age, while guarding the values of the traditional education system.
Today’s students face a lot more dilemma regarding their career choices and have to be muchmore prepared for the high expectations of companies to win an employment position. More alternatives call for more difficult decisions which can be made only by smart planning and preparingfor the future. Orientation at University is necessary to become aware of the weight of these choices and to be able to think longterm concerning studies. There is a big demand for a more unified and transparent information system to be able to obtain this crucial information and to become fully aware of the true value of gained knowledge at university.
New demands have to be answered with new solutions. Driven by this simple observation, we come to the idea of a ’University Recommender System’. The main goals of this system are to show the potential residing in the education offerings of BME VIK and reveal its needs for possible updates in the information system. We do all that by presenting each course’s primary description and its future application in employment oppurtunities by sketching a more transparent system.
The start of this thesis work investigates the reasons of existence of recommender sofwares in modern higher education and represents the background of it in that respect. It highlights the importance of orientation and decision-making while showing its difficulties. Furthermore, it offers alternative solutions for those and puts the self-developed software in the center as the main focus. Afterwards, its present version’s design and implementation are introduced through an expressive example.
