Nowadays, the three-dimensional broadcasting has been increasingly gaining

ground in newscast and entertainment. This is popular, because you feel the events

takes place around you and you may become part of the story, thanks to the 3D

visualization. It is obvious that the future of television lies in this.

The two eyes see two different images and that provides the stereophonic

experience. Since we need to transmit two pictures at the same time, using the same

bandwidth, the images can be transferred only with half the resolution. Therefore it is

difficult to broadcast three-dimensional videos in high-definition quality.

The goal of the thesis is to expand the possibilities of the 3D broadcasting with

an FPGA system. My purpose was to implement a tool, which allows transferring

pictures in HD quality without greatly increasing the bandwidth. Within the confines of

this thesis, I have realised a soft-core processor implemented on FPGA, which executes

an MPEG-2 decoder program. I will present detailed description of the realization of

the processor and the interfaces. I will introduce the development environment I used

as well as the operation of the C source of the MPEG-2 decoder. The main aim of this

work is to get acquainted with the FPGA environment and the video codecs, which

helps me to continue my work on 3D broadcasting.
