Development of CAN-bus bridge

During the work with my diploma dissertation I learned about breast cancer, its frequent occurrence and root causes. I explored the mammography screening and diagnostic tools, especially the GE Healthcare Senographe Essential mammograph, which funcitions I got to know. I examed the HASS investigation and its background used during the mammograph manufacturing process, then I learned about the necessary technical details needed for creating the design, which are mainly the CAN serial communication and the CANopen object-oriented standards.

I started designing the CAN interface board with the knowledge of these informations, the after creating the proper specification I started the development. This included electrical design steps, like circuit design and creating printed circuit board layout, which ended with building the circuit. I continued with software programming the microcontroller used in the board in C, and developing with the help of Vector CANalyzer communication software. After this I started writing an application for PC in National Instruments’ LabVIEW 2009 development platform.

Finishing the design process the prototype was put in a box, then I started the tests which identified some issues, but these were easily corrected and then the interface tool and the PC application was working properly. This made it ready to make engineering tests and measurements more efficient.

This task showed me, how complex is properly developing a simple board, you have to be very careful during the work to get a working prototype/unit at the end of the design process.
