Development of gymnastic monitoring application with Asus Xtion Pro

The history of gymnastics is usually linked to the ancient greeks, but we should not forget that there exists ancient egyptian and indian archaeological artifacts on which there are postures referring to gymnastics. The appearance of physiotherapy is set around 2000 B.C, and emperor Huang-Ti is considered as its inventor. Physiotherapy is the most common type of the rehabilitation after surgical operations. It is also the most effective long-term cure for lower back pain, backache, flatfoot, neck pain, osteoporosis and other musculoskeletal disorders.

My task was to create a gymnastic excercise-inspector software, which operates using the ASUS Xtion PRO depth-sensing camera, and works in home environment. With the help of this program, the exercising person’s transport fees can be reduced and their schedule can be loosened(they can do the exercises when and where they want to). The physiotherapist’s task can also be eased, since after thinking out the proper exercises, their supervision can be handed over to the program. The software was created by upgrading another software made by BME Healthcare Technologies Knowledge Centre.

In my thesis, first of all, I examine the methods of motion capturing, and explain their advantages and disadvantages. After that, I present the original software, which I further developed, and explain my solutions in detail. At the end I evaluate my results and explain how the software could be further developed in the future.
