Developing a hiking application for Android

This thesis is about designing a hiking application for Android platform. The application provides means to use the traditional hiking GPS features, but also take advantage of the opportunities provided by mobile devices, including the possibility to take photos, videos, and being online.

The thesis describes the methods of localization, and how they can be used on mobile devices; and how we can show the location in a comprehensible form to the user, on maps. Although the Android system provides built-in system to show maps, I show other means, how we can surpass these features. In the following, those main features of the Android platform which are important from the development point of view, and also the features of the Spring 3 MVC framework, which was used for server-side development, will be shown.

The biggest part of the thesis is the presentation of the application itself, including its architectural design, the details of the implementation and the user’s manual. In the end, the possibilities of further development will be shown.
