Implementation of an UART and LIN interface using FPGA

My thesis topic is connected with evosoft Hungary Kft. With another four students we created a universal microcontroller in FPGA circuit. We divided the project up into different segments. My duty was to work out peripherys in VHDL language which can work with UART serial communicational protocol and LIN serial communicational protocol.

The main advantage of the microcontoller realisation on FPGA that it can be optimized in terms of the utilization. Therefore only those periphery can enter into which are important from the point of view of the target project. Not an irrelevant viewpoint that the system which was created in this way can work with a much higher clock signal frequency.

This modul is based on an industrial specification. Verifying this module by a third person will open the way to build these methods into this kind of work process.

As the point of the dissertation is to present the mentioned peripherals, during my research I collected the most often used serial communication protocoles by microcontrollers and I introduce the APB protocol since the modules are connected to the processor through this standard interface. I present their operation by illustrations as well. The following parts shows the creation of the two peripherals discussing their operation and tasks. I present the opportunities, coming up during the realisation of the seperated part-tasks, and explain the reasons of my choice. Finally the result of the test, made on the finished peripherals, are showed by illustration.
