Functional- and Performance Analysis of Next Generation Firewalls

Nowdays corporate networks go through serious developments. The network appliances not only have to serve the constantly growing data transfer rates and service requirements. As network security threats grow day by day, more and more companies pay particular attention to protect their network and information. The best solution to serve the network needs and to provide integrated security are the next-generation firewalls.

In the first part of my thesis, I will cover the evolution of firewalls, the most common attack types of our days and various defense techniques for firewalls.

In the next part I will create an open source test enviroment and different test cases to simulate daily traffic patterns. After that I will examine three big manufacturers (Cisco, Fortinet, Juniper) devices by performance, then I compare the results to the data sheet and relative to each other.

My thesis contains useful information for network professionals, who plan to design complex, cost-effective and secure networks for small businesses.
